South Dakota to Wyoming

To answer some of your questions: Yes we took that picture of Mount Rushmore, and yes we saw the back sculptures too - it was a long hike but it was something we didn't know about. There is definitely something to be said for being there! Okay, in the sculptures of Mount Rushmore there is George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, ______, and Abraham Lincoln. Who did we leave out?

Today we drove from Custer State Park SD. to Greybull, WY. We saw several trains full with coal and then several empty trains going to the mines, but the trains were miles long - seriously, they were hundreds of cars long! We also saw this today:

Hope everyone had a nice Labor Day Weekend! Tomorrow we arrive in Yellowstone!

  1. I know who you left out -- but only because it's too easy to cheat on the internet. I also found out that Doane Robinson came up with the idea to carve a giant monument to attract tourists to South Dakota, which evidently worked on you two. His original idea was to carve up some other big rocky hills called The Needles, but after that was rejected (along with his initial concept to carve the Beetles' heads into the landscape) everybody involved settled on the concept of 60-foot-tall heads of 4 presidents carved into their current location. You can find out all about it on Wikipedia.

Since Wikipedia is built not by experts but by "crowdsourcing," its accuracy and its thoroughness are occasionally called into question. In this case, as you might notice, its history of Mt. Rushmore lacks any mention of the Beetles.
